Today's Science

Editors and writers of Today's Science use dozens of sources to create their articles. The major sources include Science, Nature, PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), PLoS (Public Library of Science), New England Journal of Medicine, and numerous other scientific journals as well as a broad array of both focused and general journalistic sources, including Scientific American, Science News, New Scientist, Discover, National Geographic, New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal. The editors also rely on university news releases, reports from conferences, and scholarly and government Internet sites (e.g., websites of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the American Institute of Physics, Nobelprize.org). Writers and editors also contact or interview researchers directly to gain a better understanding of scientific issues as well as to obtain photos or other background aids.

Where details of a story derive from a specific source, the editors make a point of naming the source within the story; for example, "according to a story in News@Nature June 23." Articles contain bibliographies to guide further reading, as well as URLs for scientific abstracts of the research papers they discuss.

A number of Overview and biographical articles in Today's Science come from Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia. Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia is published by Weekly Reader Publishing Group and reproduced by permission.
